Guantanamo- The delivery of awards to educators with an outstanding career, as well as the recognition of literacy teachers and founders of the Education Union distinguishes in Guantánamo the day of tribute to educators that began last November 15 until December 22, the date on which Cuba declares itself first illiteracy free territory.

The Education Union in the easternmost province of Cuba also promotes several activities to praise the work of pedagogues, including the holding of class festivals, meetings with literacy teachers and students from pedagogical schools, exhibitions of clubs of interest, among other initiatives that display the educational work of the territory.

At the same time, in the more than 800 teacher staffs at the Guantanamo educational centers, they perform cultural galas, agricultural and industrial fairs, domino, chess and baseball competitions, among other initiatives to recognize the more than 29 thousand teachers and workers of the Education, Science and Sports union in the territory.

In Guantanamo, a group of educators will receive the José Tey, Rafael María de Mendive medals, the Distinction for Cuban Education, as well as the Rayos de Sol Award, Joya de la pedagogia, recognition granted by the Association of Cuban Pedagogues in the province, In addition, those centers and workers with active participation in the teaching process will be rewarded.

Teacher’s Day is celebrated in Cuba every December 22, in memory of the year 1961 when the Leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro announced the culmination of the Literacy Campaign, and proclaimed the country a Territory Free of Illiteracy.
