Guantanamo. The cultural gala “Rebellious Olive Tree,” held at the Guaso Theater in Cuba’s easternmost province, brought together multiple generations of Guantánamo artists to commemorate the centennial of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz’s birth. Through a rich artistic program, the event paid homage to the leader of the Cuban Revolution, celebrating his enduring legacy.
The Provincial Concert Band, accompanied by the Voz Tempo and Guantánamo Male Choirs, delivered a stirring performance of “Yo soy Fidel” (“I am Fidel”), arranged by Maestro Conrado Monier, which added a poignant dimension to the tribute. Renowned pianist René Méndez and emerging flautist René Vázquez Porto contributed with distinguished musical collaborations under the artistic direction of Lázaro McPherson Williams.
Highlighting the commemorative gala were choreographic presentations dedicated to Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz by the dance companies Danza Libre, Danza Fragmentada, and Ballet Folklórico Babul.
The event also featured the lively rhythms of Changüí Guantánamo and the troubadour-style songs performed by singer-songwriter Josué Oliva. Additionally, lute virtuoso Jesús Fernández and guitarist Adalberto Suárez accompanied improvisational poet Lino Matos, enriching the program’s cultural tapestry.
Among the local cultural community’s tributes were performances by art instructor Dayamis Lores of the José Martí Brigade, soloist Liban Durruthy, and recitations by Beatriz Soto, Ángel Boffil, and Gustavo Sánchez. The Colmenita Guantánamo theater group also contributed to the evening’s array of artistic expressions.
The commemorative gala was attended by Yoel Pérez García, First Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, and Governor Alis Azahares Torreblanca, alongside representatives from various institutions, sectors, and political and mass organizations in the region. Their presence underscored the profound respect and admiration of the people of Guantánamo for Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz on the occasion of his centennial.
