Guantánamo.- More than 800 foreigner students from 54 countries have graduated in Guantánamo since the founding of the University of Medical Sciences in the eastern province in January 1980.

One of them is Dr. Demei Adrián Yobech, from the Republic of Palau, the only international graduate in the most recent graduation of the institution. He received his diploma last Wednesday, November 26, at the Pedro Agustín Pérez Multipurpose Plaza, along with 389 other physicians from the eastern province.

“I will take with me the heart of the people here; it gives me the strength to do much more than I know I can. I see the healthcare professionals working with such dedication, I am very proud to be be in this graduation ceremony representing my country, he said.

“Through a cousin, I learned about the medical scholarships offered by Cuba. I took the entrance exams and had an interview with the government authorities. That’s why I enrolled in the program.”, Dr. Yobech explained and said again, “I want in the future to study cardiology or gynecology, which are much-needed specialties in my country. I will work in my country for two years and then return to choose one of those specialties.”

During the 43rd graduation ceremony, the University of Medical Sciences of Guantánamo has now trained more than 35,000 professionals in its 45 years of teaching in health-related fields such as Health Technologies, Medicine, Dentistry, and Nursing. These new medical workers will provide high-quality health care in Cuba and around the world.
