Guantanamo – The nearly 200 pioneers and educators of the 14 de Junio special school, located in the Guantanamo City, suffer every year the restrictions imposed by the commercial, economic and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba, a criminal policy that limits the acquisition of basic resources required for the teaching-learning process of students, such as writing paper for the Braille system, contact lenses, canes and sound toys.
Yaima Salas Ruiz, director of the center, reported to Radio Guantánamo that the main challenge facing the teachers of this educational institution is the rehabilitation of children with deaf-blindness and additional disability. They can join society, but that is not possible without the help of technology.
“PERKINS mechanical Braille writing machines cannot be acquired by Cuba, since they are manufactured and sold in the United States,” Salas Ruiz confirmed referring to the consequences of the criminal US government measure against the people of the archipelago.

Due to the negative impact of the blockade against the island for more than 60 years, it is also difficult to acquire specific teaching aids for blind and deaf children by limiting the necessary materials- There are also lack of high-powered lenses and glasses for nearsighted children and the necessary equipment for the rehabilitation of strabismic and amblyopic children, as well as electric wheelchairs for children with physical and motor disabilities and special aids.
