Guantanamo.- October 8 is a very special day for students joining the José Martí Pioneer Organization in Guantánamo and throughout Cuba.

As the country commemorates the centenary of the birth of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz and the 59th anniversary of the death in combat of Commander Ernesto “Che” Guevara, these students begin a new stage in their education this Thursday, embracing the principle that their primary duty is to study.

It is also a day of pride for the teachers and family members who will help guide them as they grow into well-rounded revolutionaries and honorable men and women.

Every October 8, the nation marks this special occasion in tribute to Che, who was wounded in combat in 1967 at Quebrada del Yuro, a rugged location in the Bolivian highlands. He was captured there and executed the following day.

Yet Che lives on in the hearts of all those who believe that a better world is possible.
