Professors and students of the University of Guantanamo contribute to the province´s development strategies, based on their scientific studies and participation in 41 projects, with the purpose of increasing agricultural yields, the quality of services and caring for the environment.

In this sense, the use of agroecology, ecosystem resources, the motivations to establish productive chains and other actions stand out. It was recognized by Dr. Yuri Rodríguez Matos, vice-rector for research at the House of Higher Studies.

This work also materializes in the increase of alliances with local governments, based on advice to achieve better use of science and technology in solving the problems of municipalities.

Today, 57 percent of the projects in which the University of Guantanamo intervenes are linked to food production, of which the one that applies biological products in coconut cultivation stands out, mainly in Baracoa, to increase yields in favor of greater sales of cones, nougats and other derivatives.

The project of the agroecological zoning of cocoa is distinguished. They implement this technology not only in the Nipe Sagua Baracoa massif but in other territories of the country to increase the production of this exportable item.

Last year, the House of Science and Progress of the province won  57 awards, of which the 17 students recognized as Researchers, 2 national awards stand out, among others that demonstrate the efforts of Higher Education for the socioeconomic development of the country.
