Guantanamo.- The start of the 2026–2027 school year on Tuesday, September 1, will be a great celebration for Guantánamo and the entire country, said Doctor of Science Naima Trujillo Barreto, Minister of Education, during the regular tour conducted by a team of national experts and officials throughout the country to review preparations for the new academic year.
The minister, accompanied by the highest political and government authorities of the eastern province, noted that despite the difficult socioeconomic circumstances, the country is addressing the main educational needs of children and adolescents in accordance with the realities of each institution and community.
Trujillo Barreto also highlighted the personalized attention that will be provided to students in vulnerable situations. She urged families to use the existing channels to submit proposals aimed at improving the teaching and learning process, which is characterized by flexibility and adaptation to the specific circumstances of the current period.
The Minister of Education also reported that, despite the intensification of the economic war against Cuba, chalk, pencils, notebooks, school records, flags, and other essential materials have been secured to ensure the proper development of the upcoming academic year.
More than 79,000 students in Guantánamo will begin the 2026–2027 school year. To prepare for it, intensive work was carried out during the vacation period to ready and improve educational institutions, said Antonio Tamayo Romero, director general of education in the eastern province.
A total of 818 educational institutions in Guantánamo will open their doors on September 1. Educational zones have been identified to optimize teacher coverage and ensure effective attention to students and their families, in coordination with the *My Neighborhood for the Homeland* movement and the Community Youth Network.
