With the aim of recognizing the work of institutions, organizations and outstanding people in HIV prevention activities, health promoters who stood out for their work this year were recognized in Guantanamo with the Esperanza Award.

Aracelis Martínez Téllez, responsible for the HIV AIDS program, presented the awards to Jorge Luis Martínez Wilson, in the Solidarity modality, an activist who during this last stage contributes to raising the self-esteem of people living with HIV and participates in training and prevention activities developed in various communities.

Likewise, Ignacio Torres Savón received recognition from Ayuda Mutua for his dedication to collective work and participation in activities aimed at educational and work centers in the territory in support of family members and people infected with HIV.

The Esperanza Awards are awarded in Guantanamo in the month of December as part of the World Day to Fight HIV/AIDS campaign, a reward for organizations, institutions and people that support and carry out educational actions towards the community, to prevent risks and avoid HIV infection.

This epidemic claims more lives every year, a reality from which Cuba does not escape, registering around 1,500 cases of the virus each year, with a higher incidence in men who have sex with other men and in the transsexual population, despite the efforts in the nation to minimize the number of infections.
