Guantanamo.- In recent hours, families in Guantánamo whose relatives will represent Cuba at the upcoming 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, have officially been recognized as Central American and Caribbean Family Homes.
The initiative honors the families of the province’s 25 athletes, coaches, and sports officials who will participate in the Games from July 28 to August 8.
One of the homes receiving the official commemorative plaque belongs to rapid-fire pistol shooter Jorge Grau Potrillé.
The ceremony, attended by local sports authorities, representatives of the Municipal Sports Complex, and members of the athlete’s family, highlighted his outstanding contributions to Cuban sports.
At the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, Grau emerged as the most decorated athlete of the Cuban delegation, winning one gold, one silver, and one bronze medal.
He also represented Cuba at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, where he captured the gold medal in the men’s 10-meter air pistol event with a Pan American record score of 237.3 points, securing qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
During the Lima Games, Grau earned a second gold medal in the mixed 10-meter air pistol event alongside his Cuban teammate, further cementing his status as one of the nation’s elite shooters.
The San Justo neighborhood has long been recognized as a cradle of sporting excellence. In addition to Jorge Grau Potrillé, the community is home to sport shooters Amanda Thalía Rodríguez Baró and Arisnelkis Cruz Arjona, canoeing coach Nelson Perales García, and beach volleyball player Damián Gómez Limonta.
The home of Amanda Thalía Rodríguez Baró also received the official Central American and Caribbean Family Home designation.
Sports officials, local authorities, and members of her family gathered for the ceremony honoring the young athlete, who this year graduated with top academic honors, earning the highest diploma as a Bachelor of Physical Education.
