Guantánamo.- For their results during the year 2024, young athletes and their coaches, who stand out in the pioneer category, were recognized, in an event held in the José Martí Park in the capital city of Guantánamo Province.
The event celebrated their sporting achievements and was part of the commemoration of the 66th anniversary of the Triumph of the Cuban Revolution, to highlight the importance of sport in the training of future Olympic and world champions.
The ceremony was attended by José Manuel Pérez Estrada, official of the Provincial Committee of the Party and Richard Cruz, director of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER, in Spanish), in the easternmost territory.
Representatives of the Cuban Workers’ Union of Sport and the province’s greatest athletes attended the event, in which the new generation were awarded and the legacy of the Historical Leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz, was honored, who always promoted sport as an essential pillar for the integral development of youth.
The best athletes of various disciplines were recognized, such as four young wrestlers and an outstanding judo athlete who were honored for their outstanding results throughout the year.
In addition, women’s softball was awarded as the best team as well as the 10 best athletes were also awarded in the individual performance along with their coaches in disciplines such as baseball, chess, athletics, boxing and weightlifting, which underlined the sporting wealth that exists in the territory.
Rosa Camila Elizáztigui, provincial president of the pioneer organization, urged the young people to demonstrate their ability to overcome obstacles, even in the face of the economic blockade that Cuba has faced since 1992, and emphasized that with respect, example and study it is possible to achieve outstanding results and be an example for young people.
Yeiner Rodríguez González, head of the high performance department in Guantánamo, referred to the recent achievements of these athletes, some of them won gold and silver medals at the National Pioneer Games held last April and July.
The province ranked fourth at the national level in that category, which is a positive indicator for sports development that not only shows the current potential, but also we have high hopes for the coming competitions, in which Guantánamo may continue reaping great successes, he added.
