Guantanamo Scientists Specialists from various centers presented new research and the results of some studies prior to 10th International Convention on Environment and Development, held in Guantanamo, regarding sustainable practices and the use of knowledge in pursuit of caring for the environment, among other topics.

This meeting aimed at evaluating the quality of about 10 research works, as well as providing suggestions that give them a greater value and scientific impact to represent the province in the International Convention, in search of participatory socioeconomic development together with the protection of the atmosphere.

Among the investigations there is one that deals with the need to apply agroecological practices on the farms of Valle Grande and Los Mangos, belonging to the communities of El Peral and Montgomery, in the Guantánamo Municipality, to counteract the problems of poor quality water for irrigation, soil salinization and other factors, in favor of better agricultural yields.

Likewise, experts highlighted the research work regarding the potential to generate electricity from the gasification of waste in the Pueblo Nuevo sawmill, in Imías Municipality, in the Guantanamo Province, which prevents negative impacts on the environment.

The participants also presented a proposal for actions to recover the Sabanalamar coastal zone, in San Antonio del Sur, the role of environmental education in the protection of the Guantánamo Guaso hydrographic basin, among other studies.

Ileana Clark, president of the jury, recognized the interest in showing the local experiences of specialists from various institutions, mainly the Center for Technological Applications for Sustainable Development (Catedes).

She also pointed out that, from the debate held in the pre-convention conference, the investigations will be enriched, of which the ones with the greatest impact will be selected to represent Guantanamo in the international forum, to be held in Havana next July.][/bg_collapse]
