Guantanamo.- Argeo Martínez, the only sugar mill in Guantánamo province, is preparing for an unusual harvest season. From October through December, the mill will process sugar cane into syrup for alcohol production. It will then resume conventional sugar production from January to February to supply the provincial market.

During a review of preparations for the harvest campaign led by Yoel Pérez García, the province’s First Secretary of the Communist Party, officials reported that 17,000 tons of cane are currently available for the first phase, focused on syrup production. A further 65,200 tons are expected to be harvested for the production of raw sugar.

As part of efforts to restart operations at Argeo Martínez sugar mill and in response to the country’s ongoing economic and social transformations, the agro-sugar industry has signed an agreement with Cuba Ron S.A.

Under the arrangement, Cuba Ron will provide the fuel oil required for the harvest season and, in return, will receive alcohol—an essential raw material for the production of rum.
