Passenger transportation guaranteed in Guantanamo during the summer season

Guantanamo.- The transport sector in Guantánamo Province is gradually implementing measures introduced under Cuba’s ongoing socio-economic transformation program.

One example is the School Bus Business Unit. According to Ovidio Vera Ramírez, the unit’s operations manager, it provides general passenger services while prioritizing the transportation of teachers to and from municipal centers in Baracoa, Maisí, Niceto Pérez, El Salvador, Manuel Tames, and Caimanera.

Transportation for educators and other passengers is provided according to fuel availability. The fuel is purchased in foreign currency by the Ministry of Transport and allocated to the province to strengthen services responding to high public demand.

Education authorities in the municipalities are responsible for ensuring that bus drivers transporting teachers to and from their workplaces comply with established procedures. These include picking up passengers traveling to and from the provincial capital, subject to vehicle capacity. Fares remain lower than those charged by private transport operators.

The Guantánamo railway administration has also announced the resumption of interprovincial train services. These include a university train to Santiago de Cuba, operating on Mondays and Fridays at a fare of 600 pesos, and a service to Holguín on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, with tickets priced at 800 pesos.

Local rail services have also resumed. Trains to Honduras operate twice daily, with fares set at 50 pesos. Similar services to Boquerón and Caimanera operate at the same frequency, costing 80 and 40 pesos, respectively.
