Guantanamo,. The 39th anniversary of the Turquino Plan was celebrated in Hatibonico, in Caimanera Municipality, with Municipal Mayor Eider Matos Samón in attendance. The program, launched by the Cuban government, aims to foster comprehensive and sustainable development in the nation’s mountainous and remote regions.
Since its inception, the Turquino Plan has significantly enhanced the community’s economic sectors and improved the overall quality of life for its residents.
The anniversary festivities coincided with International Children’s Day, featuring a variety of games and activities organized by cultural promoters and sports instructors. The transformation of Hatibonico since the revolutionary triumph of January 1, 1959, is striking; once characterized by unsanitary living conditions and a lack of basic services, the community now boasts essential facilities such as a family doctor’s office, a community center, and a mixed-gender school, among others.
In addition to these advancements, the resilience and dedication of the local population shine through as they continue to build socialism in close proximity to the illegal U.S. naval base.
The Turquino Plan, established on June 2, 1987, has not only improved infrastructure but has also empowered the residents of Los Monitongos, Cuba’s first ecological reserve to achieve Sustainable Land Management (SLM) status, showcasing their commitment to both progress and environmental stewardship.
