Guantanamo.- Guantánamo will host the 34th edition of its Book Fair, dedicated to the centenary of Fidel Castro’s birth. The event will feature a professional program focused on local and Cuban historiography.
One of the main activities will be the colloquium “Fidel: Living Memory,” organized by the Provincial Center for Books and Literature and the Union of Historians of Cuba. The program will include lectures, book presentations, and discussions on key events in the life of the leader of the Cuban Revolution, as well as his revolutionary thought.
Special attention will be given to Alejandro Hartmann Matos, a historian, researcher, and writer from the city of Baracoa and the recipient of the 2021 Provincial History Prize. He will deliver the lectures “Indigeneity in Cuban Culture” and “Indigeneity in Cuba in the 21st Century.”
As part of the event, Hartmann Matos will receive the CEMÍ, the highest distinction awarded by the Government of Guantánamo Province. The honor recognizes his outstanding research career and his contributions to preserving and promoting the history and heritage of Baracoa.
The activities of the historiographical program will take place from September 4 to 6 at various venues throughout Guantánamo. These will include the Manuel García González House of History, the Pedro Agustín Pérez House Museum, the Asdrúbal López Athenaeum Bookstore, educational institutions, and community spaces, where the Cuba Association of Historians (UNHIC) will engage directly with the public.
