Guantanamo.- The 2026–2027 school year began on September 1 in Guantánamo with a provincial ceremony held at Plaza 24 de Febrero. The event was attended by students from various educational levels and local education officials.
The ceremony reaffirmed the commitment of students and educators to strengthening the national education system. It also underscored their determination to uphold the ideals and principles of the Revolution despite the challenges and external pressures facing Cuba.
More than 79,000 students are expected to attend classes this academic year in approximately 800 schools, where 10,227 teachers will guide them through new learning experiences and the development of knowledge and skills.
This school year, priority is being given to ensuring that all students have access to in-person instruction through the establishment of Grouping Centers, which bring together students from all educational levels. Classes at these centers will be organized in shifts to allow students to attend in-person lessons near their homes without having to travel long distances.
Antonio Tamayo Romero, General Director of Education in Guantánamo, reported that all educational institutions in the province’s ten municipalities, as well as the provincial centers, have the learning materials required to begin the school year.
“Pencils, notebooks, chalk, erasers, and the books for the first and second grades of the remedial program—the same books we have been using—are available. The workbooks provided to each student, particularly in early childhood education, are also guaranteed,” the director stated.
