Valdes Mesa in YaterasThe Cuban Vice President Salvador Valdés Mesa began the second day of his visit to Guantanamo in the Yateras Municipality, in Guantanamo Province, to verify the implementation of the Plan for Food Sovereignty and Food and Nutrition Security, as well as other programs aimed at the food production.

Also the member of the Political Bureau, accompanied by the highest political and governmental authorities of the province and of that mountainous Guantanamo territory, reviews the progress of the sowing of  different basic crops plan, municipal self-sufficiency, the balance and the contracting process of the harvests to farmers, the delivery of land for food production, non-payment to producers, the agreement of prices and the confrontation with crime, with emphasis on the theft and slaughter of cattle.

In an exchange with directors and producers from Yateras, Valdés Mesa highlighted the importance of rescuing rurality in our fields, a task that he described as “integral, for everyone, and everything possible must be done to improve the living conditions of the residents of our fields.”

Valdes Mesa called on the need to enforce the Food Sovereignty and Food and Nutrition Security Law, increase science and innovation projects based on food production, manage to link young people to agricultural tasks and achieve goal of making municipalities self-sustaining.

The Vice President of Cuba insists on “doing different things to boost food production. We must reduce the high quota that the country spends importing food that the nation can produce,” he said.][/bg_collapse]
