The member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and its First Secretary in Guantanamo, Rafael Pérez Fernández, visited some of the reservoirs in the territory to check the monitoring system carried out by the agencies in charge of the reservoirs in the midst of extreme weather events.

After the rains of the last few days, the Faustino Pérez reservoir, located to the north of the capital city of the territory and which supplies 75 percent of the inhabitants of this city, is at 94 percent of its full capacity – some 24 million cubic meters of water- volume that did not reach more than 7 years ago.

Pérez Fernández, accompanied by the main managers of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INRHI) in the province, was interested in the system of operations of the dam and the security measures that are adopted to avoid damage to the population that lives downstream of the reservoir that discharges its water.

The specialists of INRHI the explained that the reservoir must release considerable volumes of water during these rainy days to keep it at about 24.5 million cubic meters, the maximum allowed by the security system. Hence they exhorted to take all precautions and to be aware of the information issued through official channels.

He also learned about the repair work on the spillway walls, which do not pose any danger to the safety of the reservoir.

The delegation reached the community of Santa Fe in El Salvador Municipality, where the Los Plátanos dam is located, which has been abandoned for several years, and shows significant deterioration in the curtain and the spillway. Despite being a small reservoir, the water collected cannot be managed and if it overflows it can create dangerous situations for the surrounding residents.
